A leading engineering firm – developing a thriving Graduate and Apprentice Population

When we met the Early Careers team the first thing that struck us was their passion to make sure that every apprentice and graduate under their care has a great experience on their Early Career Programme (ECP) .

The companies ECP are award winning and the employees who complete them have the option to go on to have successful rewarding careers in one of the UKs best engineering firms. But it was clear from our conversations that they were very aware that the combination of busy personal lives, busy working lives and study can place a lot of pressure on their shoulders. It was clear in their minds that they wanted and needed to do more with their apprentices and graduates to prepare them for their journey ahead and equip them to succeed.

This is where Gen Healthy Minds came in. We sat down with the ECP team and shared how our Mindset Transformation programme could equip their people with the knowledge and tools to look after themselves and develop a positive healthy mindset.

Our workshops have explored a range of topics from Growth Mindset, Resilience, Stress and Mindfulness in a hands-on fun and practical way. The conversations started in the workshops have helped open up a healthy dialogue about mental health amongst the cohorts that we believe will continue well beyond the classroom.

We have followed up with access to our Emoquo tool to those that wanted it, thereby giving them access to another tool that provides day-to-day support and our online content which explores in more depth the topics covered in the workshops. We will also be running workshops focusing on other aspects of wellbeing including sleep, nutrition and financial wellbeing.

We have measured the impact of the programme through surveys pre and post event which have consistently shown that the apprentices and graduates feel that they are better equipped to be more resilient and face the challenges they come across.

The Early Careers Programmes Lead provided

‘ When I joined the Company at the start of 2019 it quickly became apparent that whilst we have really great programmes supported by great people in our business, they were also in need of more proactive support to help equip them mentally for what we hope will be long and rewarding careers with us but also for their lives in general. It was very clear when meeting Mike and his team that they shared our passion and views on this important topic and also were developing a great programme that would really compliment what we already do to support our ECP
population.  It’s for these reasons that we continue to work with Mike and his team to develop our programme and their offering to us

Amey Plc – Be the best

At Amey the development of their apprentices and graduates is a key priority. It is crucial for the future success of the organisation that they develop the highly skilled workforce they need to meet their clients’ needs as they deliver largescale and complex infrastructure projects.

To meet these needs Amey is innovating in how it develops young talent as it introduces the UKs first ever rail degree apprenticeship programme. This work-based degree will be delivered over five years with both new and existing colleagues benefiting from it.

Amey recognise that this programme, as well as its other apprentice and graduate programmes, will place an extra pressure on young people starting out on their career journeys and this is why they are putting in place a comprehensive wellbeing and support framework to ensure that their colleagues stay well and thrive mentally.

Our Mindset Transformation programme forms part of a wider framework including their existing employee assist programme and online support apps that will help every apprentice “be the best”.
